Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, really surprisedeveryone when he publicly came out as gay more than six years ago, on June 30, 2019.
The following are some members of the community who have made significant contributions to the visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in hip-hop, using their platforms to challenge norms and promote inclusivity.

That is to say that the only person he appears to have been publicly linked with to date is Yai Ariza, who graced his presence in his That’s What I Want music video in 2021. But within weeks of the video’s release, he confirmed that the two had since broken up. Quay Dash A transgender rapper, Quay Dash has been vocal about facing transphobia and discrimination, using her platform to advocate for transgender rights and visibility in hip-hop.

In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands–little stuff like that.
Either way, after coming out, it didn’t take long for Hill to embrace his new persona. I don't want to do that anymore. He wrote,
you see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say i’m pushing an agenda.
But he did clear this out within a few days as, during an appearance on the BBC Breakfast show in July 2019, he confirmed he’s gay, saying (via The Media Network),
I am gay. This led the "Old Town Road" hitmaker to share that he is no longer comfortable discussing his sex life with the public.

And yet, he has bravely moved on and come a long way since then, being extremely private about his dating life otherwise.
The very first time he came out, though, was to his father and sister earlier in June 2019, before he broke the news on Twitter weeks later. Doechii A queer Black woman, Doechii has embraced her identity in her music, aiming to disrupt norms and promote LGBTQ+ representation in hip-hop, calling her “literal existence as a queer Black woman is a major contribution to the hip-hop genre.”

Before this, of course, his outrageous dressing sense and flamboyant personality had already given many of his fans numerous hints about his sexuality. These were part of a collaboration between Lil Nas X and New York-based art collective MSCHF, and were made using Nike Air Max 97s (via CNN).
However, things took a toll on him when Nike filed a lawsuit against the singer, claiming that his use of their sneakers would cause irreparable damage to the brand, and even streaming services temporarily removed his songs from all platforms (though the removal was claimed to be a technical difficulty instead of active censorship).

Lil Nas X even penned down an Instagram note to his “14-year-old” younger self, reflecting in the powerful letter why he wanted to release Montero, which is about a relationship he had with a man in 2020.
Mykki Blanco A transgender artist, Mykki Blanco has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using their platform to challenge stigma and promote acceptance within the hip-hop community.
6. And, judging from all of this, in spite of everything, it’s clear how Lil Nas X has more than just proven over the years how unashamedly queer he is.

This song served as an open-hearted letter to his fans as it described Hill’s fears and hopes for the future after getting candid and upfront about his sexuality with the world, being looked at as a leader and spokesperson for the queer community.
He views his music and visibility as a means to inspire others to embrace their true selves.
2. i know we promised to never come out publicly, i know we promised to never be ‘that’ type of gay person, i know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist.
Continuing, he admitted that it was “scary” to be so open with the world, but also put forth how he knows there to be a greater purpose behind it.
And I like to go missing for like a week to focus … not talk to anyone and focus on myself. “I know the people who listen to this the most, and they’re not accepting of homosexuality,” he said.
And yet, something changed during the Pride Month of 2019 that eventually had him take the bold leap into the light as a gay man.
