Studies have shown that attempts to change someone’s sexuality can result in everything from poor self esteem to increased suicide risk and mental health problems.
“These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery,” said California governor Jerry Brown as he signed a bill banning gay-to-straight therapy in the state in 2012.

To cope with and compensate (overcompensate) for their inner conflict, some closet LGBTQ individuals may openly reject and even lash out at the very sexual orientation/identity group they secretly belong in order to gain acceptance, suppress inner turmoil, and deny their true selves. - Refusing to acknowledge homophobia exists or is a significant issue in LGBTQs’ lives.
- Regularly making negative self-depreciating remarks about one’s own sexual orientation/sexual identity.
Some patients referred themselves, hoping to be able to conform to the social norms of the time, and others arrived through the criminal justice system. Patients underwent aversion therapy over the course of five days, alternating with testosterone injections to condition positive associations when looking at images of semi-naked women.
Feeling self-conscious or anxious when expressing oneself or engaging in activities in an environment of heterosexual privileges and norms (i.e. And Exodus International, an umbrella group that connected various conversion therapy groups and gay ministry organizations, closed down in 2013 after nearly 40 years of operations after its president, Alan Chambers, decided it’s impossible to change someone’s sexual orientation.
