Hao Wu, a gay Chinese filmmaker living in the USA, documents his family’s reaction when they learn about his sexual orientation, same-sex partner and their decision to have children through surrogacy.

Young Maximo, whose family make their living through petty thievery, lives in a poor area of Manila. As the two are drawn closer together, the movie draws viewers deeper into Takeko’s difficult past.

Access to films produced more recently can be limited, while it can be daunting to navigate the multitude of streaming options.

Taiwan

A compelling performance from Mo Tzu-yi forms the backbone of this drama about Lin, the gay tenant of an elderly woman who raises her grandson as his own child.

But as Sook-Hee develops a complex bond with her new mistress, she begins to question her loyalties. Gay rights, and representation of gay men on screen, vary hugely from country to country, offering a rich diversity of fascinating movies. Incorporating elements of the erotic thriller and gothic romance, The Handmaiden is a tense examination of sadism and repression.

Sexual jealousy inevitably rears its head, and violence ensues.

Unorthodox erotic obsession permeates the best-known works of Nagisa Oshima, notably the ultra-controversial Ai no corrida (1976), with its graphic scenes of unsimulated sex, and the homoerotic atmosphere of the prison camp in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983).

It would be still to claim that we’ve compiled a list of the best Taiwanese queer movies. Filmmaker Hikaru Toda follows the couple in their professional and personal lives, offering a critical examination of Japan’s systemic dysfunctionality in protecting marginalised groups. In the two years leading up to the 2019 passing of Asia’s first same-sex marriage law, over 20 Taiwanese queer movies were created, with Netflix-binge-worthy titles like Dear Ex rising to international acclaim and sweeping the Golden Horses, the local Oscars.

With visibility has increased, filmmakers found success branching out from forbidden love and coming out tropes to tell a much wider range of LGBTQIA+ stories, from adoption to transgender issues, to the experiences of indigenous queer people on the island.

It follows the friendship of two men, brought up through the strict training of the Peking Opera School. The Half of It follows Ellie Chu, a smart yet socially awkward Chinese-American teenager who agrees to write love letters on behalf of a high-school classmate to his crush, Aster.
