Gay Weddings in Church
In the U.S. alone there are more than 200 denominations of Christianity and an estimated 380,000 churches.
That’s a lot of potential wedding venues, but often only if you fall into the traditionally accepted hetereosexual couple category.
Over the last few decades more realms of Christianity have come to see the light, and are more inclusive to same-sex couples.

This dilemma, increasingly common in our society, puts one’s conscience to the test and raises complex questions about the practical application of Catholic doctrine in delicate personal situations.
The Catholic Church is clear on its position on marriage and homosexuality, but applying these teachings to personal situations can be challenging.
With one of their core values being “We believe in the autonomy of every local church. Section three of this statute defined marriage as a union between a man and woman for federal purposes. Reformed
The Reformed Church has always been backwards in coming forwards.
This typically involves counseling sessions, classes, or workshops. “It is a validation and justification of an act that in itself is intrinsically immoral and contrary to the law of God,” he added.

Ruling #1: DOMA
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was enacted by Congress in 1996.
How can one reconcile loyalty to family or a friendship with the teachings of the Church? This permission is called a “permission to enter into a mixed marriage” for baptized non-Catholics or a “dispensation from disparity of cult” for unbaptized individuals.
Understanding Denominational Differences
Eligibility for church marriage varies significantly across Christian denominations due to diverse theological beliefs, historical traditions, and scriptural interpretations.
They have been adamant against homosexuality within their religion, going as far as it label it a ‘sickness’ and a ‘sin’.
In 2021, they finally allowed congregations to make their own polices on LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage with churches deeply rooted either side.
The Importance of Religion
Sociological studies over the years have shown that when the individuals entering the marriage value religion that they enjoy greater stability and higher levels of satisfaction.
This ruling affects 1,136 federal provisions, including the following:
- 403(b) beneficiaries
- Social Security benefits for spouses
- Social Security survivors benefits for spouses
- Tax-free status of employer-provided health care for spouses and dependents
- Pre-tax SRA contributions to cafeteria plans for spouses
- Flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts for spouses’ expenses
- Sales of principle residences
- Joint tax returns
- Estate taxes—transfers at death are exempt from tax
The ruling will create a disparity in the way same-sex couples are treated depending on state law because in the 37 states where marriage is still defined as a union between a man and woman, DOMA still applies.
You can however currently receive premarital counseling, prayers, homily at the wedding or scripture reading if you are entering into a same-sex marriage.
Pentacostal
Pentacostal churches are LGBT-affirming. The Supreme Court ruled that this provision is unconstitutional for two reasons:
- It invaded the province of state and local government to make regulations about marriage.
- It violated article five of the Constitution, which incorporates the concept of equal protection of the laws.
It’s important to point out that the Court did not issue a sweeping endorsement of same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
We believe Baptist churches are free, under the Lordship of Christ, to determine their membership and leadership, to order their worship and work, to ordain whomever they perceive as gifted for ministry, and to participate as they deem appropriate in the larger body of Christ”, they allow each church to determine where they stand on inclusion.
Catholic
The American National Catholic Church allows women and gay individuals to receive holy orders and they recognise same-sex marriage.
The Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptits are committed to advocating for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people within the churches. The other 37 states, which don’t recognize same-sex marriage, remain unaffected.
